Wilhaggin has some of the biggest yard trees on this side of the county, and in December that means a lot of houses where you can barely pick out the roofline from the curb. Plenty of homeowners there stopped trying years ago. If you’ve been meaning to get lights up and don’t want to spend a Saturday on a ladder under a sycamore, we do Arden-Arcade Christmas light installation start to finish. We’re right next door, just up Fair Oaks Boulevard, so it’s a short hop.

What goes up on a mid-century ranch

Most of the houses around here went up between the late 1940s and about 1970. That usually means a long single-story ranch with a low-pitched roof, a deep overhang and a gutter that runs the whole front. It’s a friendly shape for roofline lights. The strands clip to the gutter lip or the shingle edge, and we keep the line dead straight so it looks tidy from the street.

A lot of these ranches have skinny porch posts holding up the overhang. Those take a pillar wrap nicely, and a pair of lit posts frames the front door better than you’d expect. Garland suits this style too. A lit run along the porch beam softens that long horizontal line, and a lit wreath hung dead center on the front door ties it together. Our garland page shows more of how we hang it.

Front lawns here tend to be big and flat, so stake lighting along the walk or the driveway is easy to do well. We flag the sprinkler heads first and set the stakes in the gaps.

We’re careful with these trees. The sycamores and oaks here are older than most of the houses, so a trunk wrap goes on in a relaxed spiral with no wire and no twist ties, and we leave the long limbs over the roof alone. When the canopy hides half the eaves, we don’t fight it. We light the edges you can see from the street and let a couple of wrapped trunks carry the rest.

    Neighborhoods we work most

Arden Oaks is quiet streets with classic ranches and some newer custom homes mixed in. Those custom builds often have taller rooflines and more corners, so we plan the ladder work around them before install day.

Wilhaggin and Sierra Oaks are the estate lots, with long driveways, big front trees and homes set well back. Driveway stakes and a couple of lit trunks near the road go further than anything on the roof when the house sits that deep.

Mariemont has tree-lined streets, big lots and backyards with pools and landscaping that’s had a long time to grow in. If you entertain outside in December, the backyard trees are worth lighting, and we’ll run a separate timer for them if the outlet’s out back.

    January takedown and mid-season fixes

By the second week of January your gutters are bare again, every clip and strand gone, and your garage shelves stay free of light bins. Everything runs on timers we set, so the lights come on and go off by themselves. Should a run blink out halfway to Christmas, ring (916) 999-5158 and somebody from our crew swings by to replace it.

We also light River Park and Campus Commons across the river, and our Sacramento page covers those. For a free estimate, call (916) 999-5158 and tell us a little about the house and the trees. Our contact form goes to the same crew if you’d rather send a picture of the trees first. Early December fills quickly, so a call to (916) 999-5158 in November beats a call in December.
