North Highlands grew up next to McClellan, and plenty of the houses still show it. Single-story ranch homes, simple gable roofs, carports, and a front-yard tree that was planted when the house was new and is now the biggest thing on the block. That’s an easy house to light well, if you know where to spend the effort. North Highlands Christmas light installation is a short drive north for our crew, and we’re glad to take the ladder work off your hands.

    Simple rooflines, done right

A low ranch roof is about the friendliest thing a light crew can ask for. The eave runs straight across the front, the gutter is within reach, and there’s rarely a second story. Each clip hooks onto the gutter or slides under a shingle tab, and we keep the bulbs evenly spaced and the line tight enough to look crisp from the street. Nothing goes into the fascia.

Where there’s a carport or a porch held up by posts, we wrap those posts like pillars. It frames the front of the house and gives it some height. A wreath above the garage door or in the front window, plus a strand of lit garland along a porch rail, and a plain little ranch looks finished.

The trees that did get big

Not every street here has heavy canopy, but the yards that do usually have one standout tree that’s older than anything else nearby. That tree is often the best part of the display, so it gets a relaxed spiral on the trunk and we follow the lower limbs only as far as they’re strong. If the canopy hides part of your roofline, we’ll light what shows and lean on the tree for the rest.

Front yards with a lot of shrubs can be lit too, which is a nice option when there isn’t a big tree. Our bush lighting page shows what that looks like.

Alder Grove’s older yards often have the big trees we like to work with, so a trunk wrap does more there than a second roofline would. In Highland Terrace, a lot of homes have the carport on the front, and those posts make an easy pillar wrap. Larchmont Village, up toward the Antelope side, has plain rooflines and a lot of front walks long enough for a row of stakes on each side. Mission Rancho, up near I-80, has straightforward rooflines that light up in a morning, and we can usually fit two of those houses into one day.

Closer to Madison Avenue, on the south end of town, the lots are a little wider and the front lawns flatter, which is good ground for stake lighting along the walk or driveway. We find the sprinkler heads first so the stakes go between them, not on top of them. Outlets matter, too. Many of these houses have one outside plug, so we plan the runs carefully, and a timer lights the house at dusk and shuts it off late.

Older houses sometimes have gutters that have been patched or rehung over the years. We check them before hanging anything, and if a section is loose or pulling away, we’ll show you and keep the weight off it. Same goes for a carport roof that’s seen better days. We’d rather light a little less than put stress on something that’s already tired.

Shops and churches along Watt Avenue can get the same work.

Pulling it all down in January

In January we swing back through, unclip the roof, unwind the trunks and pull the stakes. Nothing waits on the gutters for spring, and no bins end up stacked in your garage.
