Restraint is the hard part in Barrett Hills. The houses are 1960s single-level homes, and a good number have that mid-century modern look people compare to an Eichler. Lines like those don’t want much added. Our approach to Barrett Hills Christmas light installation is to find the one or two lines the architect cared about and light those, and leave the rest alone. One clean line beats five busy ones

On a single-level house, roofline lights do nearly all the work. A single unbroken run along the front edge of the roof, level and evenly clipped, suits a mid-century house better than outlining every window. Since everything is one story, any dip or crooked clip is right at eye level.

Fastening is by clip, to the roof edge or gutter. Sixty-year-old fascia has seen enough weather, so no nails, staples or screws go into it. If your house has exposed posts at a carport or entry, pillar wraps there are the natural second element. Read more on the roofline lights page.

No HOA window for Barrett Hills Christmas lights

We haven’t found a homeowners association in Barrett Hills. Carmichael is unincorporated, and the county has no put-up or take-down schedule for house lights that we could locate. You choose the dates. A timer keeps them from burning all night.

If you want a public kickoff for the season, Carmichael holds its annual holiday tree lighting at Carmichael Park.

A couple of photos of the front help, especially one that shows the whole width of the house and one of the yard. Text them once you’ve talked to us at (916) 999-5158, or upload them on the contact page. The lights come with us, the climbing is ours, and a timer gets set before we leave.

In January we return and take everything off the house and out of the beds, and you never store a bin. If part of the display goes out mid-season, (916) 999-5158 reaches us.

    Gardens, not just lawns

Yards here are roomy, and a lot of them are gardened right out front. That changes stake lighting. We place stakes along the path or the bed border by hand, between plants, and we don’t run cords through anything you’ve been tending since spring. We also do lights on shrubs and hedges if a planted bed is the main feature out front.

If a mature tree stands in the yard, we can wrap it too, by hand and without a single fastener in the trunk. The tree lighting page has the detail.

    A neighborhood that walks

These are quiet streets, off the main roads, with lots of dog walkers. Jan Park sits in the middle, more than thirteen acres of turf, picnic areas and walking trails off Jan Drive. So your display is seen slowly and up close, far more than from a car.

That favors small things done well. One wreath, lit, hung on the door or on a blank stretch of wall. Lit garland around the entry, or along a low fence if you have one. Neat cords, tucked and out of sight, because a walker ten steps away sees every one of them.

    Asked often in Barrett Hills

Does anyone in Barrett Hills set dates for Christmas lights?

Not that we’ve found. We haven’t turned up an HOA, and we know of no county schedule for lights on a house, so when yours go up and come down is your decision.

What does Barrett Hills Christmas light installation look like on a mid-century house?

Less than you’d think. One straight line along the roof edge, wrapped entry posts if you have them, and a wreath usually look better than outlining every window and door.

I garden in my front yard. Will stake lights damage my beds?

We place stakes by hand along paths and bed borders and keep cords out of plantings. Tell us what is growing in December and we’ll work around it.

My house is near Jan Park. Does that change anything?

A little. The park’s walking trails bring people past on foot, so your display gets seen up close. Neat cords and a good wreath matter more than extra lights.
